WORKSHOP

Don't Scrap That

Hosted at Serendipity Arts Festival 2024
Facilitated by Afshan Mariam

What if your kitchen scraps could nourish more than just the compost pile? Don’t Scrap That was a hands-on, playful workshop that invited participants to reimagine everyday food waste as natural self-care rituals.

Led by educator Afshan Mariam, the session demonstrated how simple, often discarded ingredients like tomato and papaya peels, coconut pulp, and coffee grounds can be repurposed into DIY masks, scrubs, and treatments — celebrating both sustainability and personal well-being.

Key highlights included:

  • Learning to make quick, all-natural spa treatments using common kitchen leftovers.

  • An introduction to the beneficial properties of everyday ingredients like fruit peels, pulps, and coffee grounds for skincare and self-care.

  • A guided session on mixing, applying, and experiencing these nourishing treatments firsthand.

  • Reflections on how food waste can be creatively repurposed within the home, offering small, joyful ways to practice sustainability.

This workshop reminded participants that care for the self and care for the environment can go hand in hand — and that waste is often just an opportunity waiting to be rediscovered.
