The Mushroom Keepers: Film Screening & Panel Discussion

A screening of The Mushroom Keepers, a short film produced by the Fungi Foundation and directed by Naveed Mulki. The film explored the intricate relationships between fungi and the Khasi and Garo communities of Meghalaya, India, offering a moving reflection on cultural erosion and a call to action for the preservation of indigenous fungal knowledge systems.

The screening was followed by a panel discussion that brought together perspectives on ethnomycology, traditional food practices, and climate resilience. Panellists drew connections between the film’s narratives and local examples, such as olmi, Goa’s prized Termitomyces mushrooms, to highlight the role of indigenous knowledge in responding to environmental change. The discussion underscored the cultural and ecological importance of fungi and considered how ancestral wisdom could offer guidance in navigating contemporary ecological challenges.
